"What gear should I buy?"
It’s one of the first and most frequent questions we hear from new students, and for good reason. Walking into the world of Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA) means navigating a maze of specialized equipment. While every piece of your kit is important, no piece is more critical than the mask that protects your head.
For years, the standard for HEMA has been a modern sport fencing mask paired with a padded overlay. This setup has served the community well, but as the intensity of our training and sparring has grown, so has our understanding of its limitations. A standard mask is designed primarily to withstand pokes from light, flexible weapons, not the powerful cuts and concussive force delivered by a steel longsword. The constant impacts, even those that don't seem serious, can add up over time.
This is why we at the school have a clear and strong (and at this time, only) recommendation for our students when they are ready to purchase their own mask: the Wukusi Cobra.
So, what makes this mask our go-to choice? It comes down to a simple, yet crucial, design philosophy. Unlike the mask-and-overlay combo, the Wukusi Cobra is an integrated system built from the ground up for the rigors of HEMA. It features a hard-plastic shell over the entire mask, which is designed to do two things exceptionally well. First, its shape and smooth surface help strikes to glance off, redirecting the energy of a blow away from your head. Second, for the hits that land squarely, the hard shell works with internal padding to distribute the force over a much larger area, lessening the sharp impact that gets through to your skull.
Think of it as the difference between a helmet and a padded coif. Both offer protection, but one is clearly engineered to handle more significant force.
Now, no piece of equipment is perfect, and it’s important to be honest about the trade-offs. The Cobra is heavier and hotter than a standard mask, and the noise of a direct hit can be louder inside the shell. Sizing can also be a bit tricky, which is why we always recommend trying on a club member’s mask if possible before you buy.
Despite these considerations, we believe the trade-offs are well worth the dramatic increase in protection. Your brain is your single most important asset, both in and out of the fencing hall. Investing in its safety is the wisest decision any martial artist can make. The Wukusi Cobra provides a level of security that allows you to train with more confidence, knowing your head is well-armored for the challenging, rewarding journey of HEMA.
